About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Houston, Soul Food Vegan offers a vibrant culinary experience that redefines classic soul food through a compassionate, plant-based lens. This cozy vegan restaurant at 2901 Emancipation Ave tempts your senses with dishes that celebrate bold flavors, soulful spices, and comforting textures — all thoughtfully crafted without any animal products.

The menu showcases an enticing array of soul food favorites, lovingly reimagined for vegans and adventurous eaters alike. Indulge in the All Day Platters, where you can choose from a hearty Cauliflower Steak or crispy Fried Mushrooms, paired perfectly with seasoned collard greens, creamy mac and cheese, and rich dirty rice. The Chicken Fried Steak Platter is a standout, serving up golden yams, black-eyed peas, and savory dirty rice topped with a luscious vegan gravy — flavors that evoke the warmth of a Southern kitchen with a mindful twist.

For those craving something handheld, the Cajun Burger and Supreme Burger deliver a powerful punch of flavor. The Supreme Burger features a Beyond patty crowned with fresh spinach or kale, tangy BBQ sauce, a crispy onion ring, mushrooms, vegan bacon, and a side of both chips and uniquely seasoned Moringa fries — an inventive and satisfying combo that lingers with smoky, spicy notes. Smaller plates like the Boudin Balls with their dirty rice mix, or indulgent dishes such as the Mardi Gras Nacho and Pasta Melt add excellent variety, ensuring every craving is met.

The dining atmosphere at Soul Food Vegan is intimate and inviting, making it a perfect spot for couples or small groups who appreciate closely connected conversations paired with soulful music that hums gently in the background, setting a laid-back yet lively vibe. While the space may not accommodate large parties comfortably, this adds to the charm — encouraging diners to savor each bite and moment fully.

Guests often praise the freshness and quality of the ingredients, praising the kitchen’s dedication to intentional cooking that never feels heavy or greasy, even with many fried options. The menu's spice levels are thoughtfully calibrated; for example, the collard greens pack a spicy kick that ignites your palate, a detail that points to the kitchen’s passion for authentic, vibrant soul food flavors.

Customer Sharise Jones raved about her Double Agave Bac'n Burger, highlighting the Moringa fries as a delightful accompaniment, while Carla Claure called it “hands down, the BEST vegan soul food” she’s ever tasted — a powerful testament from a traveler with just a short layover. Other diners, like Keyanna Davis, appreciated the warm hospitality and the “fireeeeee” recommendations with every dish made from high-quality, fresh ingredients.

Whether you’re a committed vegan, a health-conscious eater, or simply someone craving deeply satisfying comfort food that heals and nourishes, Soul Food Vegan invites you to enjoy a soulful meal that uplifts both body and spirit. This is vegan soul food with heart, soul, and unmatched flavor — a truly authentic Houston gem.

While visting Houston, I really enjoyed Soul Food Vegan. I went on a Thursday evening and it wasn't crowded or a long wait. We ordered and received our food within 15 minutes, freshly prepared. The sitting area is very intimate so I wouldn't suggest a large group to eat in but for my husband and I, it was perfect. I had the Double Agave Bac'n Burger (spicy) which came with Moringa fries. I also ordered a side of Mac n Cheese and collard greens with a Strawberry-Moringa Lemonade. Everything was delicious and full of flavor. The Mac was cheesy like I like it! I loved the soulful atmosphere. Would definitely recommend and I hope to visit again to try something new off of the menu!

When you want high-vibrational and living (non dead body = cemetery) soul food, which is soul food that heals and does not kill, there's only one choice. Enjoyed the Mac and cheese and fried shrooms the most. Greens got a nice kick. Boudin balls can be a return. Greetz from the Mile HIGH city, Denver.

Hands down, the BEST vegan soul food I’ve ever had. I only had a few hours on my layover so I’m glad this was my main destination. Highly recommend checking it out. I got the platter that comes with fried mushrooms, dirty rice, mac n’ cheese, collard greens. I asked for it to be spicy and it was sooo delicious!

My bbq mushrooms were perfect! Yams weren’t traditional like I was anticipating but my fried okra was good and tasted fresh. Collard greens were overly spicy. If I knew there was even a hint of hot spiciness associated with them I would’ve ordered a different side to try. I did not like my peach rolls at all. The texture was bad...very very chewy. I was told that everything on the menu was gluten-free so that made me happy to have a variety of items to try. I’d come back to try several different entrees. Many options on the menu were unfortunately sold out .

I had a phenomenal experience here! The girl with the locs was really nice and gave me fireeeeee recommendations. Everything was fresh and was made with high quality ingredients. Even though some of it was fried, I didn’t feel sluggish or heavy after eating it. You could tell they’re intentional and great cooks in the kitchen. Not to mention, they play really good music. I felt like I was at a family member’s house or something. I can’t wait to come back to Houston so I can try more from their menu! I would definitely recommend people give this place a try, vegan or not.

Wow, all I can say about this place is that the food is plant based, but super delicious. Both my nieces had a burger, Mac n cheese, and I, shrimp scampi. The service was excellent. Beautiful decorations. Nice setting. Good abd beautiful people behind the counter. Please, you gotta try this place if you are vegan. I recommend this place.
